For most of us, our method is personal - an ensemble of our techniques, tricks of the trade, ways of presenting materials, ways *in which we analyse and structure the content.

History of language teaching shows it swinging like a pendulum between extremes of method as teachers have searched for different solutions. Tempting to view language teaching methodology as a continuous upward progress through history, not yet perfect but moving towards perfection. But closer analysis of older books on language teaching reveals surprising similarities with present day methodology.

Methodologies are as much a product of their times as educational systems, and rooted in the ideas of their time. Ideas have a habit of coming into and going out of fashion. Many new approaches are rediscoveries of old methods neglected but e-illuminated.

Throughout the middle Ages Latin was the lingua franca of Europe. Before the 13th century no languages other than Latin and Greek were formally taught. Latin was an essential vocational subject for any youth aspiring to further education or to work in the public service - it was the key to the world of scholarship.

Through 15th, 16th and 17th centuries - gradual decline of Latin as accepted lingua franca. The rise of the vernaculars and their diffusion through the new technology of printing led to a gradual separation of functions. Latin was still the key to literature and thought, but the vernacular took over its social role as a language of everyday communication.

The court of Charles II in the 17th century brought in the French language, which was to become the diplomatic language of the time. Towards the close of the 18th century the French Revolution provided England with scores of first class French scholars, exiled aristocrats - all resorted to giving private lessons as a living.

In the 19th century the modern language breakthrough continued with Germany leading the way - due to the prestige of German philosophers (Humboldt, Kant and Hegel, German science and technology, literature (Goethe and Schiller), music (Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven).

Most famous language methodologist of 17th century was J A Comenius (1592-1670). Languages at this time were being taught by oral methods for communicative purposes. The works of Comenius stress the importance of the senses rather than the mind, the importance of physical activity in the classroom. He is best known for his use of pictures in language teaching. Much in Comenius is surprisingly modern. "The exemplar should always come first, the precept should always follow".

At the same time the philosopher, John Locke, was also laying emphasis on oral skills: "French should be talked into the child ... Grammar is only for those who have the language already".

Yet by the end of his life Comenius had done a complete volte-face - renounced his earlier ideas and was proposing the learning of a language from pre-set rules of grammar. The Age of Reason had arrived. Renaissance man was a doer, but 17th and 18th century man was a thinker. Language for the man of reason was governed by logic. The basic rules of language were embedded in grammar and the art of translation was central to language learning.

The Grammar/Translation method was born, which was to continue in Britain well into the 19th century - reflecting an educational system which was geared to logical thinking and to teaching an elite of cultivated minds.

1) Speaking    2) Reading     3)Writting     4) Listening

1) Speaking    2) Reading     3)Writting     4) Listening

Building your house

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the house-building business to live a more leisurely life with his wife and enjoy his extended family. He would miss the paycheck each week  , but he wanted to retire .They could get by.

The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes , but over time it was easy to see that his heart not in his work .He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials . It was an unfortunate way to

End a dedicated career.

When the carpenter finished his work , his employer came to inspect the house. Then he handed the front-door key to carpenter and said , " This is your house …. My gift to you ."

The carpenter was shocked !

 What a shame !

If he had only known he was building his own house , he would have done it all so differently.

For My Dad

For My Dad
For
the father that you are,
and the father that you've been,
If I had a choice to make,
I'd choose you, Dad, again.
For the trials I put you through,
and for the times I let you down,
I'm proud you've finally seen,
how God turned my life around.
You never ran away,
when the times were tough to take...
instead you gave me courage,
to face my own mistakes.
Thank you for your strength,
and the faith to see me through...
the love you gave to me,
is the love I'm sending you!

James Dean's car curse

In September 1955, James Dean was killed in a horrific car accident whilst he was driving his Porsche sports car. After the crash the car was seen as very unlucky.

a) When the car was towed away from accident scene and taken to a garage, the engine slipped out and fell onto a mechanic, shattering both of his legs.

b) Eventually the engine was bought by a doctor, who put it into his racing car and was killed shortly afterwards, during a race.

c) When James Dean's Porsche was later repaired, the garage it was in was destroyed by fire.

d) Later the car was displayed in Sacramento, but it fell off it's mount and broke a teenager's hip.

e) In Oregon, the trailer that the car was mounted on slipped from it's tow bar and smashed through the front of a shop.

f) Finally, in 1959, the car mysteriously broke into 11 pieces while it was sitting on steel supports.

Sixty-four-year-old Thai Ngoc, known as Hai Ngoc, said he could not sleep at night after getting a fever in 1973, and has counted infinite numbers of sheep during more than 11,700 consecutive sleepless nights. "I don't know whether the insomnia has impacted my health or not. But I'm still healthy and can farm normally like others," Ngoc said. Proving his health, the elderly resident of the village said he can carry two 50kg bags of fertilizer down 4km of road to return home every day. His wife said,"My husband used to sleep well, but these days, even liquor does not work." She said when Ngoc went to Da Nang for a medical examination, doctors gave him a clean bill of health, except a minor decline in liver function. Ngoc currently lives on his 5ha farm at the foot of a mountain busy with farming and taking care of pigs and chickens all day. His six children live at their house in Que Trung. Ngoc often does extra farm work or guards his farm at night to prevent theft, saying he used three months of sleepless nights to dig two large ponds to raise fish.

Mountain  story

A son and his father were walking on the mountains.

Suddenly, his son falls, hurts himself and screams:"AAAhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"

To his surprise, he hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain:

"AAAhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"

Curious, he yells:" who are you?"

he receives the answer:" who are you ?"

and then he screams to the mountain :"I admire you "

the voice answers" I admire you "

Angered at the response, he screams:" coward"

He receives the answer:" coward"

He looks to his father and asks:"what's going on ?"

The father smiles and says:" my son, pay attention"

Again the man screams:"you are a champion"

The boy is surprised, but doesn't understand

Then the father explains:" people call this ECHO, but really this is life

it gives you back everything you say or do

our life is simply a reflection of our actions

If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart

If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence

Life will give you back everything you have given to it"

I think people everywhere dream about having lots of money.  I know I do.  I would give anything to make money hand over fistI would like to earn large amounts of money.  You could win a large amount of money in the United States through lotteries. People pay money for tickets with numbers. If your combination of numbers is chosen, you win a huge amount of money – often in the millions.  Winning the lottery is a windfall.

A few years ago, my friend Al won the lottery.  It changed his life.  He did not have a rich family.  He was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth Instead, my friend was always hard up for cash. He did not have much money.  And the money he did earn was chicken feed very little.

Sometimes Al even had to accept hand-outs, gifts from his family and friends.   But do not get me wrong.  My friend was not a deadbeatHe was not the kind of person who never paid the money he owed.  He simply pinched penniesHe was always very careful with the money he spent. In fact, he was often a cheapskate.  He did not like to spend money.  The worst times were when he was flat broke and had no money at all.

One day, Al scraped together a few dollars for a lottery ticket.  He thought he would never strike it rich or gain lots of money unexpectedly.  But his combination of numbers was chosen and he won the lottery.  He hit the jackpot.  He won a great deal of money.

Al was so excited. The first thing he did was buy a costly new car. He splurged on the one thing that he normally would not buy.  Then he started spending money on unnecessary things.  He started to waste it.  It was like he had money to burn.  He had more money than he needed and it was burning a hole in his pocket so he spent it quickly.

When we got together for a meal at a restaurant, Al paid ever time.  He would always foot the bill, and pick up the tab.   He told me the money made him feel like a million dollarsHe was very happy.

But, Al spent too much money. Soon my friend was down and out again.  He had no money left. He was back to being strapped for cash.  He had spent his bottom dollar, his very last amount.  He did not even build up a nest eggHe had not saved any of the money.

I admit I do feel sorry for my friend.  He had enough money to live like a king.  Instead, he is back to living on a shoestring -- a very low budget.  Some might say he is penny wise and pound foolishHe was wise about small things, but not about important things.

Talking about the present

English has two main ways of talking about present time: the simple present and the present progressive

THE SIMPLE PRESENT

You make the simple present by using the verb in its basic form. You add ‑s or ‑es to the verb in the third person singular

The simple present is used in the following ways

You use the simple present to talk about something which is happening now, and which will continue to happen in the future. You often use the simple present in this meaning to talk about things that are true about your life, for example where you live, your job, or the kinds of things you like

Martin lives in Canada

I work in a hospital

"What kind of books do you read?”  “I mostly read science fiction"

You use the simple present when you talk about something which happens again and again, or when you say that something happens regularly at a particular time. Use words such as always, often, sometimes, occasionally, and never, or phrases such as on Tuesdays or every day with the simple present in this meaning

They often go out to restaurants

I travel to London twice a month

He gets up at 6 o'clock

She goes to church every Sunday

You use the simple present to talk about something which stays the same for ever - such as a scientific fact

Oil floats on water

Two and two make four

You use the simple present when you are describing what is happening at the exact moment when you are speaking. This meaning of the simple present is used for example in sports commentaries

Shearer gets the ball from Gascoigne. He shoots ‑ and scores

For descriptions of actions that are happening now, you usually use the present

progressive rather than the present simple. For example

“What are you doing?" "I’m  making a poster." NOT "What do you do?" “I make a poster.”

THE PRESENT PROGRESSIVE

You make the present progressive by using a form of the verb be in the present tense,

followed by the main verb with an ‑ing ending, for example l am waiting, she is coming.

The present progressive is used in the following ways

You use the present progressive to talk about something which is happening now at the time you are speaking or writing. You often use this meaning with words and phrases that express present time, such as now, at the moment.

and currently.

“What's Bob doing?" "He's watching television."

It's raining again

I’m looking for my glasses

You use the present progressive to say that something is happening now, but will only continue for a limited period

of time. Compare these pairs of sentences

We live in France. (="France" is our permanent home)

We're living in France. (="we" are living there for a limited period of time)

He cooks his own meals. (="he" always does it)

He's cooking his own meals. (="he" does not usually do it)

If you want to talk about the subjects you are studying at school or university, you usually use the present progressive.

She's studying law at Harvard. NOT She studies law at Harvard.

I’m studying English. NOT  I study English.

VERBS THAT CANNOT BE USED IN THE PROGRESSIVE

Verbs which express a situation or process, rather than describing a definite action, are not usually used in the progressive. Do not use the progressive with the following verbs:

be                                have                           see

believe                               like                              agree

know                                love                            disagree

recognize                            hate                            mean

remember                           prefer                         need

understand                            want                           deserve

wish                           belong

I know the answer.  NOT  I am knowing the answer.

She understands me.  NOT She is understanding me
