بخش اول: خاطرات آقاي جاناتان هاركر

3 May. Bistritz.__Left Munich at 8:35 P.M, on 1st May, arriving at Vienna early next morning; should have arrived at 6:46, but train was an hour late.

سوم ماه مه، شهر (بيست ريتز) در ساعت 30/8 شب شب يكم ماه مه، مونيخ را ترك كردم و بامداد روز بعد به (وين) رسيدم . ميبايست ساعت 46/6 ميرسيدم ولي قطار يك ساعت تاخير داشت.

 Buda-Pesth seems a wonderful place, from the glimpse which I got of it from the train and the little I could walk through the streets.

با نگاهي اجمالي كه از قطار به اطراف انداخته بودم و مقدار اندكي كه در خيابانها قدم زده بودم فهميدم كه (بودا پست) شهر بسيار جالبي بايد باشد.

 I feared to go very far from the station, as we had arrived late and would start as near the correct time as possible.

از اينكه از ايستگاه قطار خيلي دور شوم ترسيدم چون ما خودمان دير رسيده بوديم و امكان داشت كه قطار در اولين زمان مناسب كه بتواند حركت كند. ـ و من جا بمانم ـ.
The impression I had was that we were leaving the West and entering the East; the most western of splendid bridges over the Danube, which is here of  width and depth, took us among the traditions of Turkish rule.

احساي من اين بود كه ما اروپاي غربي را ترك كرده و به شرق وارد ميشويم. پلهاي باشكوهي كه به سبك ـ معماري ـ كاملا غربي بر روي رود (دانوب) بنا شده بود. كه با پهنا و عمق اصيل خود ما را به ميان رسومات سنتي تركها هدايت ميكرد.
We left in pretty good time, and came after nightfall to Klausenburgh.

ما زمان بسيار خوشي را سپري كرديم و بعد از آنكه هوا تاريك شد به شهر (كلازن بورگ) وارد شديم.

 Here I stopped for the night at the Hotel Royale. I had for dinner, or rather supper, a chicken done up some way with red pepper, which was very good but thirsty.

در اين شهر توقف كردم تا شب را در هتل (رويال) بمانم. براي شام يا بهتر بگويم غذاي سبك قبل از خواب ، جوجه اي كه يك جورائي با فلفل قرمز عمل آمده بود خوردم كه خيلي خوشمزه بود اما موجب تشنگي من شد.

لغات:

Supper: British English the very light meal, for example a drink and a piece of cake, that you have just before you go to bed.

اين لغات آمريكائي نيست و در انگليسي به معني غذاي سبكي است كه قبل از خواب ميخورند.

يادم باشد دستور طبخ اين غذا را براي مينا بگيرم.

I asked the waiter, and he said it was called "paprika hendl, " and that, as it was a national dish, I should be able to get it anywhere along the Carpathians.

از پيشخدمت پرسيدم و او گفت كه نام اين غذا (پاپريكا هندل) است و اضافه كرد كه چون اين يك غذاي ملي و سنتي است من ميتوانم در امتداد ناحيه (كارپاتين) هرجا كه خواستم اين غذا را تهيه كنم.
I found my smattering of German very useful here, indeed, I don't know how I should be able to get on without it.

من متوجه شدم كه آلماني دست و پا شكسته اي را كه بلد بودم خيلي بدردم خورد و صد البته كه نميدانم بدون آن چگونه ميتوانستم كارم را جلو ببرم.
Having had some time at my disposal when in London, I had visited the British Museum, and made search among the books and maps in the library regarding Transylvania; it had struck me that some foreknowledge of the country could hardly fail to have some importance in dealing with a nobleman of that country.

با زماني كه در مدت اقامتم در لندن در اختيار داشتم يك سر به موزه بريتانيا رفته بودم و در كتابها و نقشه هائي كه مربوط به كشور (ترانسيلوانيا) جستجو كرده بودم . در ذهنم بود كه به ندرت پيش مي آيد كه داشتن مقداري آگاهي قبلي در مورد برخورد با نجيب زاده اي از آن كشور به درد نخورد. ـ از اهميتي برخوردار نباشد.

I find that the district he named is in the extreme east of the country, just on the borders of three states, Transylvania, Moldavia, and Bukovina, in the midst of the Carpathian mountains; one of the wildest and least known portions of Europe.

متوجه ميشوم كه ناحيه مزبور شرقي ترين قسمت از آن كشور است و دقيقا در مرز سه ايالت واقع شده است : (ترانسيلوانيا، مولداويا و بوكووينا) كه در قلب كوه هاي (كارپات) ميباشد كه يكي از پهناورترين و ناشناخته ترين بخش از اروپا است
